Pumpkin Dump Cake
Welcome to the world of dump cakes. If you’ve never had a dump cake, congratulations on finding this recipe! I did not fully understand what dump cakes were until I was in my 30s which makes me realize there are probably a lot of other adults like myself. A dump cake is basically a simple fruit bottom covered with dry cake mix and baked. There are blueberry dump cakes, peach dump cakes, cherry dump cakes and more! A lot of dump cake recipes are proud to be stir free!
Our recipe does require you to stir but we promise, it doesn’t take too much effort. Our smoked pumpkin dump cake is still quite simple. You combined 6 ingredients to layer on the bottom and then top with yellow cake mix, chopped pecans and butter. See? Simple! The best part is you can enjoy this smoked, like this recipe will show you, or right in your oven.

How To Make Smoked Pumpkin Dump Cake
Like I said before, this recipe is really, REALLY simple but still really, REALLY good fall dessert.
Ingredients & Equipment
The ingredients you’ll need are a package of dry yellow cake mix, a can of pumpkin, evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, salt, chopped pecans and melted butter. For serving, I highly suggest topping with whipped cream, cool whip or a giant scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. The equipment you’ll need is a smoker/pellet grill, a glass 13 x 9 inch pan, a bowl for mixing and something to stir with. Don’t forget, this can also be made right in your oven at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
Instructions
To begin your recipe, start your Pit Boss Pellet Grill or smoker and set the temperature to 350 degrees. If you’re new to using your Pit Boss Pellet Grill, download our simple guide on how to turn it on the right way!
Next, it’s time to make the base. Mix together the pumpkin, evaporated milk, eggs, salt, pumpkin pie spice and sugar in a large bowl. Pour this mixture into the bottom of a 13 x 9 inch greased dish. Once the bottom is prepared and in your dish, top with the yellow cake mix. Be sure to do this as evenly as possible since it can be difficult to spread over the pumpkin base once poured out. After the cake mix is added, evenly spread the chopped pecans followed by the melted butter.
Place your dish in your smoker for 1 hour. If you have a pellet grill, I suggest turning the dish half way through to ensure even cooking. Once an hour has passed, remove the cake from your smoker and allow to cool at room temperature for an hour. You can serve this dish warm or cold. Our family prefers it cold so we place in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours before serving.
When you are ready to serve, cut the cake into a square pieces and top with whipped cream, cool whip or vanilla ice cream. For an extra flair try sprinkling with cinnamon.

Notes For Smoked Pumpkin Dump Cake
This dish can be served warm or cold. We prefer it cold as the bottom has more time to sit and thicken but it is also delicious warm.
If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice you can use 2 tsp of cinnamon and 1 tsp of nutmeg as a substitute.
To make this in the oven, follow the directions above but cook in your oven at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes. It’s that simple! You’ll definitely want to try it in the smoker though. Those smoky notes take this pumpkin dump cake over the top!
